· Where do Alpacas come from?

             Alpacas come from the Andes mountain region of South America. 

           The largest alpaca populations are found in Peru, Chile, and Bolivia.

 

· How big are Alpacas?

             Typically alpacas range from 4-6 feet tall (to the head) and weigh between 150-200 pounds.

 

· What is the lifespan of Alpacas?       

            Alpacas normally live 15 to 20 years.

 

· Do Alpacas spit?

             Yes, Alpacas can spit, but tend to spit primarily at each other, and generally over food or “alpha order” issues.

 

· Are Alpacas mean?

             Alpacas are very docile animals and an excellent means to teach young children about farming. 

           Having no upper teeth in the front, they tend not to bite.

 

· What do Alpacas eat?

            Alpacas are pasture animals and graze on several types of grasses and hays.

           Vitamin and minerals supplements are added through special grain mixtures.

 

· What is the gestation period for Alpacas?

             Alpacas gestation period is 11 to 12 months.  Twin births are very uncommon.

 

· What is a baby Alpaca called?

             Baby alpacas are known as "Crias" (pronounced “cree-ah”) and weigh between 12-20 pounds at birth.

 

· Why haven't I heard of Alpacas before?

             Alpacas are originally from South America, and were first introduced in the U.S only twenty years ago.

 

· How many colors of Alpaca are there?

             There are 22 designated colors Alpacas with numerous additional blends.

 

· Do I need special facilities to raise Alpacas?

             Alpacas are accustomed to harsh winters, and a three sided shelter for protection from the sun and elements

           is usually sufficient.  Fencing is required for their protection from predators. 

 

· Do I need lots of land to raise Alpacas?

             Depending upon conditions, a single acre of can easily accommodate and feed 5-6 alpacas.
