Alpacas the gentle investment…

We all look for ways to secure our future, protect our investment, and limit our tax losses.  Raising alpaca’s just may be the most enjoyable means of developing and protecting your personal nest egg.  This gentle animal is by far no beast of burden.  They are highly profitable and at the same time they provide excellent tax benefits.

Why are alpacas so valuable?  As with any commodity it is supply and demand.  The demand for the high quality fiber is soaring from the craft bazaars to the upper-end fashion centers.  Each alpaca can typically yield 5-8 pounds of fiber.  That said, the supply of fiber is scarce with only approximately 60,000 animals in the United States.  Each breeder aims to improve the quality and density of the fiber through selective and creative breeding combinations.  These practices create a unique demand for bred dams and their cria which often sell at a higher rate than initial investments.  Returns of 30-70% are not uncommon.

Each alpaca can be considered as its own micro-business.  Breeding selection, show results, and fiber quality are all key elements to make the business a success.  And since it is a business- you get the associated tax benefits.  Some of these benefits include:

Depreciation of the animal value:

· The value can be depreciated over 5 years

                                     or

· 100% Capital assets deduction

Associated costs can be deducted:

· Veterinary

· Breeding Fees

· Educational fees

· Repairs and maintenance

· And numerous other potential deductions

Please seek your accountant’s advice before making serious investments.
