Why are alpacas so valuable? As with any commodity it is supply and demand.  The demand for the high quality fiber is soaring from the craft bazaars to the upper-end fashion centers.  Each alpaca can typically yield 5-8 pounds of fiber. That said, the supply of fiber is limited with approximately 160,000 animals in the United States.  Each breeder aims to improve the quality and density of the fiber through selective and creative breeding combinations. These practices create a unique demand for bred dams and their cria which often sell at a higher rate than initial investments. Returns of 30-70% are not uncommon.
